Those are called Sifteo cubes. Sifteo cubes are clever blocks with a colour screen that wireless connect to a computer to form a networked gaming platform. Each block, or cube, has a clickable, full colour LCD display, a rechargeable battery and several motion sensors. The guys at Sifteo are developing the concept of Intelligent Play™, this combines physical actions and movement to create a fun and innovative way to play games. But the product doesn’t just end there, included is the Sifteo Creativity Kit™  which allows users to customise and create games themselves. They were first previewed at the TED conference in 2009 by David Merrill: Sifteo co-founder and President.

Although it’s a complicated piece of kit, it could easily be simplified to produce a clever electronics puzzle game. Remove the colour LCD display and the PC software and throw in a Dot Matrix display and some infrared modules and you have yourself a nice little project. Let us know how you get on.

The Sifteo pack can be bought for $149 and comes with 3 cubes, a charging dock, Sifteo Creativity Kit™, and the wireless PC link. However at the moment they only ship to the US and Canada.
